Specialization: International Relations

Goal: Unique M.A. Program in the field of International Studies completely taught in English

The program provides in-depth knowledge of security-development nexus with a special focus on a new generation of conflicts and fragile states, global policy-making involving great and emerging powers, the role of the UN system and regional institutions in the security governance and sustainable development.

The founding principle of this M.A. program is the complex approach towards Global Security Studies, including Military Security, Political & Social Stability, Human Security, Agriculture & Food Security, Energy Security, Cyber Security.

1. Program Difference:

·         Unique student body (students from all aid-recipient countries => first-hand information and in-depth understanding of conflicts at grass-roots     level);

·         Close cooperation with renowned academic staff of MGIMO, Moscow     State University and Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign     Affairs of Russia;

·         Innovative curriculum (3 stages of policy analysis).

·         This program introduces the core principles of international and global affairs in the areas of conflict (global security challenges) assessment, analysis and development of the programs contributing to conflict prevention and resolution.

·         Global Security: Complex Approach - Military Security, Political & Social Stability, Human Security, Agriculture & Food Security, Energy Security, Cyber Security, etc.

Level of Qualification:

Masters (Magistr) degree is a second stage degree of a two-stage higher vocational education of a university level. It corresponds to the level 6 of the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED).

2. CONCEPT of the PROGRAM

Core courses

Analysis of the conflict -  structures, actors and dynamics.

To better understand the historical and structural antecedents of violent conflict and its conversion from latent to violent stage.

Security, political, economic and social structures and their role in a given conflict.

The contextual analysis of their linkages and connections between the sources of tension to determine the key source that lead to the given conflict.

Analysis of the conflict's actors their interests, relations, capacities, piece agendas and incentives.

To analyze dynamics of the conflict focused consideration would be given to its long-term trends, triggers of violence, of potential capacities for management and likely future conflict scenarios.

Though divided for analytical purposes into three subcategories: Structures, Actors and Dynamics are so closely inter-linked that would be approached through the course also holistically.

Stage B: Analysis of International Responses

Mapping external responses, development policies and programs assessing impacts on Conflict and Peace.

Responses of international actors: Military, Security, Diplomatic, Trade, Immigration and in the area of Development.

Responses of development actors: development policies and programs, their approaches to the conflict,

assessment of the effectiveness of their work.

Interactions between development interventions and the dynamics of conflict and peace. Main development actors and opportunities to mitigate or resolve conflicts.

Most recent research and debate on the interactions between development interventions and conflict would be carefully considered to help with definitive assessments of their impact.

Stage C: Developing Strategies and Options

To identify strategies and options for conflict reduction and for ensuring that current development approaches are conflict sensitive.

Developing common donor approaches.

Developing individual donor strategies.

Adjusting their current activities and developing new initiatives.

Forming International coalitions

The course will apply these ideas to diverse set of policy problems reflecting the current agendas of professionals working in international and global affairs. Individual faculty members will cover topics drawn from their own research, professional experience and policy interests. The course also emphasizes skill development, through an array of written and oral exercises and team activities.

3. Admission Requirement:

Higher professional university education of a first stage (confirmed by a Federal diploma of a bachelor or a specialist) and entrance examinations; good level of English.

Program requirements: Studies are done in accordance with the individual plan under supervision of the scientific advisor who should have a scientific degree and (or) title. The Master’s program presupposes active individual work of the student that is why classroom work should not exceed 14 hours a week (average during the whole period). Progress is checked during periodical attestations. Master’s thesis is an independent research paper made under the guidance of scientific advisor (with possible involvement of one or two consultants). The thesis is defended and final exams are taken publicly at the sitting of the State Attestation Commission.

5. Academic Calendar

Duration: 24 months (Program starts: September);

Mode: Full - time.

(2 years - 104 weeks including vacations during full-time of learning, 14 weeks – research internship, 120 ECTS).
